# Read Between the Lines: Soil Test Edition

Every fall, soil test results shape crop nutrition decisions across Canada. They are the starting point for 4R nutrient stewardship: matching source, rate, time and place to the conditions of each field.

But a soil test measures what is in the soil, not what the crop can take up. For micronutrients, that difference decides how much of what is applied does its job and how much becomes lost input cost. A soil test can't close that gap. How a nutrient is delivered can.

## **Nutrient Presence Is Not The Same As Nutrient Availability**

A soil test provides a measurement. It does not capture every process happening between the soil, the nutrient and the plant.

Nutrients move through soil in different ways. Some reach roots through [mass flow](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/soil-test-uptake/). Others move primarily through [diffusion](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/soil-test-uptake/). Soil pH, organic matter, texture, moisture, [microbial activity](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/soil-biology/) and cation exchange capacity can all influence how nutrients behave and how accessible they are to a growing crop.

<iframe id="sb-massflow-frame" src="https://soileos.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/mass-flow-vs-diffusion-wave-v3.html" title="Diagram comparing mass flow and diffusion nutrient transport to plant roots" loading="lazy" scrolling="no" width="100%" height="700" style="display:block;width:100%;max-width:100%;border:0;margin-top:-40px;height:700px;"></iframe>

That means a nutrient can be present in the soil without necessarily being available to the plant in the same way, at the same time, or in the quantity the crop requires.

This is particularly important when looking at micronutrients.

[Zinc](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/zinc/), [manganese](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/manganese/), [iron](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/iron/), [copper](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/copper/)and [boron](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/boron/)are required in much smaller quantities than macronutrients, but their [role in plant growth](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/nutrient-roi/) is significant. A deficiency can affect processes ranging from enzyme activity and photosynthesis to reproductive development and overall crop performance.

The challenge is knowing where the risk exists [before it becomes a visible problem](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/nutrient-risk/).

## **Soil Chemistry Changes The Picture**

Take soil pH.

As pH changes, the availability of individual nutrients can change with it. High pH soils, for example, can increase the risk of reduced availability for nutrients including [zinc](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/zinc/diagnosing/), [iron](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/iron/diagnosing/)and [manganese](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/manganese/diagnosing/).

Soil texture matters too. Clay content influences nutrient retention and movement. Organic matter contributes to nutrient cycling and microbial activity. Moisture affects root growth and the movement of nutrients through the soil.

Copper shows how these factors interact. Organic matter [binds copper](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/copper/) more strongly than most other micronutrients, which is why [copper deficiency](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/copper/diagnosing/) turns up at both ends of the range: light sandy soils with little to hold it, and high-organic soils that hold it too well. The same soil test value can carry different risk in each.

## **From Soil Testing To Nutrient Risk**

This is where nutrient risk assessment can add another layer of information.

Rather than looking only at whether a nutrient is present, nutrient risk considers the soil conditions that can influence its availability to the crop.

At Lucent Bio, we have been exploring these interactions through our work in crop nutrition, soil science and micronutrient delivery. That work has informed the development of the new [Soileos Soil Academy](https://soileos.com/soil-academy/), an educational resource covering the foundations of crop nutrition, micronutrient behaviour, soil testing and crop-specific nutrient considerations.

## **Availability Is Also An Efficiency Question**

When a micronutrient is applied but not taken up, the cost does not stop at the field. That product was manufactured, shipped and applied with no return to the crop. Improving nutrient use efficiency means getting more of what is applied into the plant, which is the goal behind both 4R stewardship and climate-smart crop nutrition.

It also changes the product question. If availability is the limit, how a micronutrient is delivered matters as much as how much is applied. That question drives Lucent Bio’s work in micronutrient delivery. In a [peer-reviewed wheat study](https://hello.lucentbio.com/the-science-of-certainty), Soileos Copper reached maximum grain yield, spike count and biomass in greenhouse trials with up to 26% less copper applied than copper sulfate, and increased yield up to 13.3% at copper-deficient field sites in Canada and the US.

## **Every Field Carries Its Own Risk**

There is no single nutrient strategy that works the same way everywhere.

Canadian agriculture spans an enormous range of soil types, climates and cropping systems. Even within the same region, differences in soil properties and management history can change the nutrient picture from one field to the next.

That is why site-specific information matters.

A nutrient risk assessment can help identify where soil conditions may increase the likelihood of micronutrient availability issues. Used alongside soil testing, tissue testing, crop history and other agronomic information, it can contribute to a more complete picture of crop nutrition.

This is consistent with the broader direction of nutrient stewardship in Canada: making decisions based on the conditions of the field, the crop and the nutrients involved.

## **Start With Your Soil**

Soil sampling season is already underway. If you’re reviewing soil test results with growers this fall, look past the numbers to the soil conditions behind them. The [**free Nutrient Risk Report**](https://soileos.com/redirect-nutrient-risk-report/) provides a regional risk assessment for key micronutrients, helping identify where soil conditions may create greater potential for nutrient availability challenges.

It is not a replacement for a field-specific soil test. It is another piece of information to add to the picture.

**See Your Nutrient Risk**

Your soil test is one piece of the picture. See what regional soil conditions could mean for micronutrient availability in your area.
